for those who are trying to start a new habit- fuck yes! you've got this!! 💪🏼✊🏽🤙🏿
a gentle reminder. it takes 9 weeks -yes over two months- to build a habit. (shout out my girl Eva the neuropsychologist for telling me this) start with a small goal and stick with it for 9 weeks. when i was healing from my eating disorders i couldn't go to the gym. but a few years ago i realized i needed to start moving my body to keep my bones strong, maintain my mental health, and ensure joint mobility as i got older. so i created a goal to do some sort of movement once a week for 9 weeks. i didn't have the excuse of not having time, i wasn't overwhelmed by numbers, i didn't wear myself out. by the end of the 9th week, i was craving the movement and endorphins. i was never dragging myself to class or the gym. i was going to the gym multiple times a week because i wanted to. not because i had to.
I listened to The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It was fine. I really loved Grit by Angela Duckworth. I've heard Atomic Habits by James Clear is supposed to be real good. anyone wanna bookclub this one with me?!
**DISCLAIMER** The Power of Habit and Atomic Habits are v broey books written by white dudes. they tend to have the privilege and time to explore, research, and write about a lot of shit. which is great for everyone because we can take the good bits of their research and leave the shit that doesn't take race, class, and gender into account
